So I've been having a think about this blog and the direction I want it to go in, and I've decided to add a new feature. I know this is primarily a lifestyle and beauty blog, but as my personal blog, I want to include more aspects of my life in it. I've developed a love of tech over the last few years, increased more so by specialising in computing as a part of my degree, and so thought it might be nice to share my interest on here, and hopefully share the little bit of expertise I have gained! So today I'd like to introduce you to my newest feature: Tech Thursdays! [Side note - I totally meant to post this yesterday but ran out of time, to let's just pretend it's Thursday, okay?]
I thought I'd start out with a recent purchase. After Christmas, Loz and I decided to treat ourselves to an Apple TV. We are primarily Netflix users and will normally choose that over freeview, so it made sense to have a more accessible way of watching it on the TV. It's a smart little box that you plug into a wall socket, and then into the TV through an HDMI cable. It comes with a swish little remote featuring classic Apple minimal design. Before, we'd plug our laptops into the TV which tended to be a bit hit and miss, and a little bit of hassle when you're just sitting down to chill out for a while. With this, you can either access Netflix (or similar apps) through the home screen, or send a feed from your Apple device through AirPlay, where you can mirror your screen to play whatever is on your computer on your TV.
As Apple users, it's been absolutely amazing for us. It's SO simple to use and we've already got so much out of it. I have been using it for editing, being able to beam photos/video onto a larger screen, and the HD connection means that I'm able to see my work in great quality. It's also just fantastic for watching tv and movies, either through the apps or another device. The only downside to this is how much more TV we're watching than usual because it's just so easy!
So, a basic summary..
Apple TV - £79
Pros:
- Easy to use
- Full HD
- No installation required
- Includes apps such as Netflix and Youtube
- Small, neat and stylish hardware
- Airplay - Ideal for use with other Apple Products - Macs, iPhones and iPads come with built in software to wirelessly play content from your device.
Cons:
- Full capabilities only accessible with additional Apple devices
- HDMI cable not included
- Seriously increased Netflix consumption
If you also have one of these nifty little boxes, I'd love to hear your thoughts!Labels: lovely things, tech
